How It Started A Passion Born Behind the Bar
My name is Ian McCall, and my brewing story began in 2004 at Brewbakers in Huntington Beach. I started behind the bar, but curiosity pulled me toward the brewing tanks. I learned the craft, started making my own recipes, and even met my wife, Lisa, during a brewing class. That moment sparked not just a career but a lifelong passion.
Chasing Craft Learning, Brewing, and Growing
After leaving Brewbakers in 2009, I worked in construction and earned my degree at CSU Fullerton. But beer never left my mind. When Beachwood BBQ launched their brewery in Long Beach, I jumped at the chance to join. I learned under Julian Shrago, grew as a brewer, and helped win top awards like GABF Mid-size Brewpub of the Year in 2013 and 2014.
Building Teams From Brewer to Leader
In 2018, I stepped into a new role as Head Brewer at Riip Beer Company. Over five years, I built a strong team and focused on brewing beers that earned recognition at major competitions, including GABF and the San Diego International Beer Festival. Each win reminded me that great beer starts with great people.

Now, I’ve taken everything I’ve learned and poured it into ISM Brewing at 210 E 3rd St, Long Beach, CA. ISM isn’t just a brewery, it’s a community space built on family, friendships, and fresh beer made with care.
